Ace in the Hole

With E3 less than a month away, PlayStation LifeStyle has gotten a head start on major game reveals by releasing early footage of Team ICO’s third game.

From this early footage, it’s easy to see what Fumito Ueda, the lead designer of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, meant when he said this third game would be similar to what Team ICO has done before:

The essence of the game is rather close to Ico.

The game, under the placeholder title of “Project Trico” stars a young boy and a giant hybrid creature that appears to be mostly comprised of rat and falcon parts. The concept of Shadow of the Colossus seems to have been reversed and made into something resembling Ico, but even that concept is turned upside down in Trico.

Instead of battling huge beasts, the main character of Trico befriends one. The strange hybrid isn’t as big as the colossi from Shadow, but that’s because the boy uses the creature to explore ancient ruins. From the early footage, the boy can be seen climbing up the creature’s tail, hanging onto the fur of its neck while swimming, and being lifted in the creature’s beak. Trico appears to be about manipulating the various features of the creature much like the colossi, but this time, it’s to the player’s advantage while exploring.

Other than a solitary knight that the creature knocked to the side, there was no other person or thing in the early footage to hint at possible enemies. Instead, it appears that Trico will focus heavily on exploration using teamwork with the strange creature. It’s doubtful there won’t be any enemies, though. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were at least a few other, equally strange and large chimeras roaming the world of Trico, some without the same peaceful temperament of the boy’s creature. Maybe it’s the music of the trailer, but something about the footage gave me the impression that the creature will die before the credits roll.

Of course, this is all speculation, but if Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are any indication, Project Trico will be a very welcome addition to the PlayStation 3’s library of games.
