DS Demoman (again): Live & Die by the Demo!

3 Jun

Demolicious!

(Each week, I’ll be taking a look at the DS demos offered through the Wii’s Nintendo Channel and giving my thoughts on the good, the bad, and the buyable.)

THE GOOD

Worms: Open Warfare 2

You can’t really fault the classic Worms gameplay which basically has you firing different weapons, relying upon physics to wipe out an opposing army of worms on a 2D battlefield. There are lots of weapons to choose from so you can go at it a few times, trying to change things up along the way. You’ll probably have to give it a few tries too if you’re not familiar with the gameplay since there’s no tutorials to be found.

THE BAD

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Your typical movie game. You can’t skip the boring cutscenes meaning you’re forced to watch them every time you die since there are also no checkpoints. The gun controls are bad, the level is short, and the graphics are horrible. (Hint: You have infinite ammo, the shells on screen are just what’s in the chamber.)

Cake Mania 2

The “2” in this game’s title must be a misprint because I really can’t see how a game like this was ever deserving of a sequel. You can find much better for free online, and I’m guessing that what you experience in the demo is majority of the gameplay so having a free demo available pretty much defeats the purpose of this even existing. Go figure.

(Note: I chose both of these games as the worst with both Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and High School Musical: Makin’ the Cut! available for demo. Yeah, the games are that bad.)

THE BUYABLE

Uh, Brain Age, Brain Age 2, and Flash Focus are still up. The demos are okay, and I’d personally recommend Brain Age, but these games have been out for a while so I’m really not sure why these demos are still up.
